Remember when Charli XCX was mistaken for Lorde in an interview and the English pop star just went with it? That’s some next-level internet meme that we miss. But in more recent news, the internet “it girl” is making a collab with the New Zealand singer a reality with a remix of “Girl, So Confusing” from her latest album “Brat” featuring Lorde.
In an Instagram post, Charli XCX announced that the version will be out by midnight, Eastern Standard Time. Lorde, for her part, posted a snippet of the remix on her Instagram Story with the caption “Let’s work it out on the remix,” an actual line on the track.
Single cover from Charli XCX/InstagramCharli on her public finsta, @360_brat, shared a longer preview of the remix where Lorde can be heard singing, “Well, honestly I was speechless when I woke up to your voice note. You told me how you’d been feeling, let’s work it out on the remix.”
Beef-ending collabRumors about how there’s tension between the two artists have been circulating around for some time, with claims that “Girl, So Confusing” is about Charli XCX being insecure when compared to Lorde. One striking evidence to this is the lyric, “People say we’re alike, they say we’ve got the same hair.”
In a profile published on Rolling Stone in May, Charli XCX admitted to once being jealous of Lorde.
“When ‘Royals’ came out, I was super jealous of the success that that song got, and that Ella got,” she said. “You piece all this stuff together in your brain, like: ‘She was into my music. She had big hair; I had big hair. She wore black lipstick; I once wore black lipstick.’ You create these parallels and think, ‘Well, that could have been me.’ But it couldn’t have because we’re completely different people. I wasn’t making music that sounded anything like ‘Royals’. I think you just read what you want into it because you’re feeling insecure about your own work.”
But she cleared that there were no hard feelings between them. “You get over it and then you try to figure out all the things that are unique about you and you pursue that, and then probably in five months’ time you have a breakdown about something else.”
A day before the album’s release, Lorde posted on her Instagram Story, praising Charli XCX, seemingly trying to negate rumors about said beef.
“The only album I’ve ever presaved is out today… Charli just cooked this one different… So much grit, grace and skin in the game. I speak for all of us when I say it’s an honour to be moved, changed and gagged by her work. There is NO ONE like this bitch,” Lorde wrote.
“Girl, So Confusing” featuring Lorde joins three other remixes of songs “Von Dutch” and “360” from “Brat” featuring artists Addison Rae, Robyn, Yung Lean, and Skream and Benga.
